The Brighton Waste House, now known as the Brighton Wild House, is an ecological architectural landmark at the University of Brighton, serving as a hub for sustainable design education, experimentation, and community engagement. Originally constructed between 2013 and 2014, the two-story building was made using over 85% repurposed waste materials sourced from local homes and construction sites—making it Europe’s first permanent public building created almost entirely from discarded resources. Its founding principle was to prove that waste can be transformed into a valuable resource, embodying the idea that “there is no such thing as waste, only materials in the wrong place.”
Designed as a low-energy, EPC ‘A’ rated structure, the building continues to function as a living laboratory for eco-design research, housing exhibitions, student projects, and experimental retrofits. In 2025, it evolved into the Brighton Wild House, a pioneering biodiversity-friendly show home that explores how housing can coexist harmoniously with the local environment while improving human well-being. The retrofit, funded by EPSRC, investigates nature-integrated materials, low-carbon construction, and biodiversity-supportive urban design.Datos Socioambientales
